Pre-names

"Ouch!"
"Baby kicking you again?"
Breathe... "Yes!" ... Breathe. This baby kicks and moves around a lot, with jabs and punches that kinda hurt, as the little astronaut grows and the space around him or her diminishes.
"Maybe we should call this one Punchy," my husband suggested.

Monkey1 and Monkey2 had nicknames in utero. Once they came out and we met them and decided on a real name, the pregnancy nickname was never used again. This tidbit of their history was fascinating to the Monkeys, and they wanted to know what their nicknames had been. Monkey1 was Beaker (except I think we spelled it Beeker... not that we had to write it anywhere), and Monkey2 was Baby Lumps. Monkey2 thought this was hilarious, and Monkey1 wanted to know about Beaker.

In a matter of seconds my husband pulled up an online video of the Muppet who was Doctor Honeydew's assistant. Monkey1 giggled through the entire clip. I doubt the Muppet Beaker had anything to do with our choice. At the time my husband was a scientist on a post-doc rotation, so he had a certain regard for the whole baby thing as a giant experiment. Beakers, the glass measuring cups used in laboratories, would be part of the standard equipment.
