"Surprise!" yelled the four-year-old daughter of the hostess from the top of the stairs.
"Surprise!" I answered her cheerfully. My Monkeys and I were late for a seven-year-old's birthday party, and I was distracted by the flinging off their coats and shoes to join their friends.
The hostess intervened, "This party is for you! My son isn't even here!"
"Oh... OH!" I said, finally comprehending, suddenly noticing that all the grown-ups were women, my friends, they were not drinking out of juice boxes, and there was a lovely spread of food on the table. (Unfortunately I had just eaten because I expected a birthday cake to be the main attraction.) Everyone laughed. The surprise of a baby shower had been pulled off.
